Gardens for resilience in the face of COVID-19, with women in La Dignidad

Guatemala

IsraAid

The La Dignidad Project aimed to strengthen food security and community resilience in La Dignidad, Guatemala, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through implementing urban gardens, the project seeks to train 19 women in urban agricultural production techniques, providing them with the tools needed to improve their livelihoods.

The project focused on promoting vegetable production for family consumption and developing basic agricultural production skills among the participating women. Additionally, it offered training to female heads of households and microbusiness owners on business resilience to address the economic challenges posed by the pandemic.

EarthEmpower adapted urban garden kits to local conditions and provided technical support to participants through phone calls, SMS messages, safe in-person visits, and educational materials that were accessible and tailored to their needs. Training sessions and instructional videos on urban gardens were also implemented, and diagnostics were conducted to identify the challenges faced by local microbusinesses, offering training to strengthen these microenterprises.
